Can the iPhone expand the smartphone market?

by David Spark on June 7, 2007

BusinessWeek has an interesting piece surrounding the hype of the June 29th release of the iPhone.

One quote stands as the real debate that’s been growing since the Apple iPhone’s announcement.

Wall Street speculation has gone from how much market share it can steal, to how much it can expand the overall smartphone market.

The chances are very high that it will because the Apple iPhone is NOT targeted at business users. In fact, the Apple iPhone will be discouraging for business users that rely on their BlackBerry and Treo’s mostly for email. The input devices on those two phones allow for fast typing of emails. iPhone’s single finger touch screen entering technique will be considerable aggravation for those people who like to respond to many emails.

Non business users don’t buy smartphones, but they will buy the Apple iPhone. Although they may wait for version 2 as version 1 is priced only for early adopters.

I spoke previously about how the Apple iPhone could ignite an up tick in the technology industry, just the same way releases of new operating systems could.

  1. Will the iPhone move markets the way new operating systems used to?
  2. iPhone rumor specifics. Warner CEO’s kids are music thieves.
  3. New iPhone? Boston Wi-Fi. CNN copies Current TV. Dotcom desperation redux.
  4. The Blogosphere vs. the SEC
