Cheap-to-free phone calls anywhere in the world from your mobile phone

by David Spark on December 20, 2008

More than a year ago, I spoke with John Scott on Green 960 about all the online services that allow you to make cheap-to-free phone calls. I wanted to update that post with an update on Jajah that now allow you to make cheap-to-free phone calls anywhere in the world through your mobile phone.

Here’s how to do it.

  1. Sign up for an account on Jajah.
  2. Select the product JAJAH.Direct and enter in the foreign phone numbers you call most often. Jajah will give you a local phone number (depending on your location, they’re not everywhere, but they are available in San Francisco. Check their list for your area.)
  3. Jajah will give you alternative local numbers for all the foreign phone numbers you entered. Simply enter those phone numbers in your landline phone’s memory or mobile phone’s address book. Remember to label them appropriately.
  4. Now you’re free to make calls with your mobile phone or landline WITHOUT the use of a computer. When you place the local call from your phone to the local number Jajah gave you, the call comes into Jajah’s servers and they reroute the call to the international destination.
  5. Check prices. To give you an idea how cheap calls from your mobile phone can be, a call from a U.S. mobile or landline phone to a landline phone in France is only 3.3 cents per minute. That price jumps to 19.7 cents per minute if you’re calling a mobile phone in France. Such is the case with mobile phones in Europe.
  6. If you’re calling these numbers often, get your international friends to sign up for Jajah. That’s because calls between Jajah members are free!

This is only a cursory explanation. Jajah actually has excellent information, rates, and FAQs on its service.

This tip is for the Spark Minute week of 12/22/08 which can be heard daily on Green 960 and 910 KNEW in San Francisco, CA.
