MySpace Extortion. Co-working in SF.

by David Spark on February 27, 2007

Don’t try to extort money from MySpace. Saverio Mondelli and Shaun Harrison pled guilty in New York state yesterday on charges of extorting Myspace. The two had written a program that collected email and IP addresses from Myspace users. And the two demanded MySpace pay them a “consulting fee” of $150,000 to STOP distributing the program.

Smart enough to write the program. Not smart enough to collect their cash. The two fell for the oldest trick in the book: “Come to LA and we’ll give you the money.” Unfortunately, Rupert Murdoch nor his cronies were there to make the exchange. Only the Secret Service and district attorney.

Self employed individuals tired of working out of their home and coffee shops will want to read an interesting BusinessWeek article about the rising popularity of co-working facilities for single person businesses. The article profiles one such facility, The Hat Factory, in the Dogpatch district of San Francisco. Try it for one day for just $10.
